FAQs: Accounting Careers

What career opportunities does accounting present?

The accounting field encompasses a whole universe of career opportunities for those who are proficient in math and finance, the foundations necessary for mastery of basic accounting skills. The services of qualified accountants are required in every type of organization—from the government to corporate business to the world of non-profits—there are accounting roles for everyone.

Furthermore, within each of these types of career paths it is possible to specialize in a particular area of accounting, such as financial planning, cost accounting, auditing, and taxation. For example, working in a government department will most often involve preparing financial reports, which provide key data for the budget planning and management process. Working in a corporate environment commonly involves the same processes and skill sets, but with the addition of tax planning and preparation.

How has accounting changed?

The traditional role of an accountant can be summarized, in simple terms, as the recording, classifying, interpreting, and reporting of the financial events that are the lifeblood of any organization. However, this simple definition does not take into full account what the job entails in today’s modern world.  The accountant’s role now tends to be much wider in terms of responsibilities than it was previously, and it can encompass such things as input into information systems design and strategic business planning.
